June 7, 2007 By ANDREW SCHNEIDER Staff Writer TimesHarlem-Irving Dunning-area residents can look forward to a new "gateway" to their neighborhood as improvements to the northwest portion of Merrimac Park near completion in the fall.

Irving Park Road, will include an ornamental plaza at the park's entryway at the southeast corner of Irving Park and Narragansett Avenue, walking and running paths, extensive landscaping with new trees and shrubs, a drinking fountain, updated lighting and new benches. A late addition to the project will be a veterans memorial to be dedicated after the improvements are completed. "It's going to be a very welcome addition and a nice gateway to the Dunning neighborhood," said Alderman Tom Allen, 38th Ward, one of the driving forces behind the improvements. "I've had it on my wish list since the late '90s."
