Serve Illinois-Governor's Volunteer Service Award

Serve Illinois is proud to announce the third annual Governor's Volunteer Service Awards. These awards recognize individual volunteers through a statewide award program to highlight the importance of volunteerism and community service in the State of Illinois.
Individual awards will be presented to one Youth (18 and under), one Adult (19-54 years old) and one Retiree/Senior (55+ years old) in each of the Commission's five service regions across the state (Northeast, Northwest, East Central, West Central and Southern Illinois). National Service Awards will be presented to one Learn and Serve, one AmeriCorps, and one Senior Corps Member in each of the five regions. Each category will be asked to meet one of the following focus areas: Economic Opportunity, Education, Environmental Conservation, Disaster Preparedness/Response, Health, and Veterans Affairs. The awardees will be recognized, along with their nominating organization, at a ceremony at the Executive Mansion in April.

Local Elder Transportation Service-Let's Ride

Do you need help getting around the neighborhood, running errands, or going to appointments?
Let's Ride! is a pilot program of the Northwest Side Housing Center and Mather's-More Than a Cafe to provide a safe, convenient transportation service to older adults in our community.
VOLUNTEER DRIVERS ARE ALSO NEEDED-PLEASE CONTACT THE HOUSING CENTER AT 773-283-3888 IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
If you live within the program boundaries(Talcott to the North, North Ave. to the South, Pulaski Rd. to the East and Harlem Ave. to the West), and need transportation to any location within the boundaries, you can take advantage of this service.
No Cost Rides will be offered every Thursday starting January 12,2012.
To participate, there is a $25 annual fee.

Black History Month Essay Competition

Each year the City Treasurer's Office sponsors a Black History Month Essay Competition. The winner of this competition will receive a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship to support the cost of attending the first year of college. The check will be issued to the college where student enrolls in the fall of 2012.

Tiny Tots Registration

Registration is now open for the Spring 2012 session of Tiny Tots for 2 year olds. The 10-week session will meet from February 16-May 10, 2012 on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00am. The cost is $60 for the 10 week sesssion, due at time of registration. Registration forms are available on the tiny Tots page of the School Website or from the school office(773-725-5133). Class size is limited:please register early.

Summer Employment for High School Students
The Chicago Summer Business Institute (CSBI) provides a six-week paid internship program for high school sophomores and juniors each summer. These internships take place at various banks, accounting, law and engineering firms throughout the Loop and business districts. In conjunction with a 28-hour work week, students attend half-day classroom seminars and workshops every week where they learn about the financial markets, attend seminars given by successful business executives, and participate in team building programs.
Eligibility Requirements:
-Student must currently be a Sophomore or Junior
(ages 15 and under must have a valid work permit);
-Student must have a valid social security card;
-Student must have a 3.0 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale);
-Student must attend either a public, parochial or private high school;
-Student must be a resident of the City of Chicago
-Student must have an annual family income of $60,000 a year or less and a parent/guardian must sign Certificate of Income Verification Form
Job Readiness Workshop:
Free job readiness workshop for CSBI applicants on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Workshop highlights include creating effective resumes, conducting successful interviews, making positive first impressions and following office etiquette. Space is limited and registration is required.
How to Apply:
Students may obtain application material from high school Principals or Guidance Counselors, or download applications from CSBI's website at www.chicagobusinessinstitute.com. Applications are due on March 30, 2012.

Attendees will learn how to file for an appeal, how an appeal is granted and Board of Review staff will be on hand to answer all questions and assist with filing your property tax appeal.
