Portage Park Center for the Arts

The Portage Park Center for the Arts is a hidden gem of the 38th Ward. When Alderman Allen wanted to bring the arts to Portage Park, he called on Jennifer La Civita to start an art center in the old Nebo Church building. She has been able to tranform the church building into a working art center with classes that range from a child's first art class to yoga for teens to quilting for adults. What is unique about the PPCA is that the church sanctuary is still intact, and is used for meetings, concerts and receptions. She refers to the building as a "neighborhood landmark", and to the many students as "special parishioners".
Jennifer started the art center 5 years ago. She is affliated with many art organizations, so finding people to teach classes wasn't too difficult. Kindermusic was the first offering at the PPCA, followed by Bertliz language classes and Monart for children. A 'Kids Night Out" is planned once a month for ages 5 & up with games, movies, pizza and stories. The Young People's Circle, a group for ages 12-18 is a new addition. Adult classes include art, writing, yoga, music, belly dancing, and cooking.
Vaughn Occupational High School students, with the help of BoldChicago and Greencorp, worked on a beautification project for the PPCA. They planted perennials and put mulch around all the trees.
The center also hosts monthly meeings of various arts groups, such as Chicago Creative Calligraphy, Wright Camera Club, and Metalsmith/Jewelry Makers.
